Who needs shoulder replacement

Shoulder replacement is considered for severe shoulder pain that has not responded to conservative treatment. Common causes include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy and avascular necrosis of the humeral head.

How the surgery is performed

Under general or regional anaesthesia, damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the humeral head and socket. A metal ball on a stem is inserted into the humerus and the glenoid cavity is resurfaced with a plastic socket - or, in a reverse replacement, the ball and socket positions are swapped so the deltoid muscle can power the arm instead of a torn rotator cuff. The incision is closed and rehabilitation begins soon after.

Recovery

Physical therapy begins early to rebuild strength and mobility. Most patients notice a clear reduction in pain within the first few weeks, with return to daily activities over the following months depending on the type of replacement performed.

Implant longevity

A shoulder replacement typically lasts 15 to 20 years or more, depending on implant type, activity level and whether the rotator cuff remains functional.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between anatomic and reverse shoulder replacement?

Anatomic replacement keeps the ball on the arm side and socket on the shoulder side, and works well when the rotator cuff is intact. Reverse replacement swaps the positions, letting the deltoid muscle power the arm when the rotator cuff is torn or irreparable.

How long does a shoulder replacement last?

Typically 15 to 20 years or more, depending on implant type, activity level and rotator cuff function.

Can both shoulders be replaced?

Bilateral shoulder replacement is possible but uncommon, and is typically staged months apart because of the recovery involved.

What does shoulder replacement cost?

Cost varies with implant type, surgical technique and hospital stay. A written estimate is given after your consultation and imaging are reviewed.
